Did you know that one of our close neighbours was named in the top 50 coolest
neighbourhoods in the world by the world-famous Time Out magazine? Dublin is
a vibrant and exciting place and nowhere is that more obvious than the colourful
neighbourhood of Stoneybatter, a short walk from our hotel near Heuston Station
in Dublin. With its eclectic mix of cafes, bars, shops, pubs and colourful locals,
Stoneybatter is a great place to add to your Dublin bucket list. What started as a
quaint residential area has become a hipster paradise with great places to eat,
drink and shop. Here are some of the hidden gems of Stoneybatter to add to
your list of things to do in Dublin.
Mooz Italian Deli
If you’re looking for a unique and delicious place to eat, Mooz Italian Deli is ideal.
The shop used to be a hairdresser called Zoom and the owner turned the sign
around and reused it – that’s the kind of creativity and thinking from
Stoneybatter residents that we love! They welcome people from all walks of life
to enjoy sandwiches, soups and homemade Italian desserts in a warm and
welcoming atmosphere. They don’t have Wi-Fi which encourages connection and
chatting among customers, fostering a lovely community spirit.
Mulligans Pub
Always highly rated and rarely found empty, Mulligans Pub is a gem in
Stoneybatter. Officially called L Mulligan Grocer, the pub has been open for 8
years in its current form but has been a cornerstone of the community and area
since the turn of the century. It’s frequently recommended as among the best
bars in the country and has a genuinely warm welcome for all who visit.
Previously a grocer as well as a drinking establishment, the pub is now a popular
restaurant and gastropub with homemade food from local suppliers. It’s busy and
can feel a little chaotic sometimes but it offers a consistently great meal and a
great pint.
Slice Café
Cafes are not a novelty anymore with new coffee shops popping up all over
Dublin each week, or that’s how it feels. However, Slice Café is different. The
food here is thoughtful, tasty and so fresh their cakes are often still warm from
the over. They have a brilliant brunch menu every day and host evening events
and private parties on request. All of the ingredients are made on-site with
freshly baked bread every morning. They provide truly high-quality produce and
have a loyal customer base that keeps them busy, especially at weekends.
Vietnom Food Truck
Hidden in the smoking area of a fantastic pub in Stoneybatter called the Glimmer
Man, Vietnom is an oasis of great food and friendly service. Often hailed as the
best food truck in Dublin, they serve the finest cuisine from Vietnam and beyond
using only the freshest Irish ingredients. They open Thursday, Friday and
Saturday from 6 pm until they sell out which they often do, so get there early.
They specialise in sandwiches (think Bhan Mi), Rice Bowls and sharing plates so
you can enjoy their food with friends over a pint from the pub.
Project 29 Gift Shop
No trip to Stoneybatter would be complete without popping into Project 29 Gift
Shop to pick up something lovely. They have gifts, homewares, candles, skincare
and so much more, all promoting positivity and local pride. They also serve great
coffee and play host to all types of workshops in the evenings. Many items are
locally sourced from Irish producers and suppliers and make great souvenirs from
a great day out in ‘The Batter’. The owners are kind and happy to stop and chat
or recommend a gift for yourself or a loved one.
Stoneybatter Festival
If you’re lucky enough to be in Stoneybatter in late June each year, you might be in time to
catch the brilliant Stoneybatter Festival, a neighbourhood festival in the heart of
Dublin 7. There is something for everyone with music, games, family fun, street
performers, stalls, street parties and so much more. It’s a great way to
experience the community spirit of Stoneybatter and meet some friendly locals.
