Backstreets of Dublin

We welcome tens of thousands of visitors to the hotel every year, many of whom come to explore all that Dublin has to offer. We’re fortunate to be in such a prime location in Dublin city within walking distance of some of Dublin’s best known attractions including the Guinness Storehouse, Phoenix Park, Dublin Zoo, Kilmainham Gaol and Jameson Distillery.
Dublin is full of great things to do but if you look a little closer to the immediate area around the Ashling Hotel there are some interesting things to do that sometimes slip under the radar. Arbour Hill Cemetery, the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History, Lilliput Press, Croppies Acre the 1798 Irish Rebellion Memorial Park and the “Floozy in the Jacuzzi” in Croppies Park are all just a short stroll away.

To help you plan your day out in Dublin, we’ve put together this list of things for you to check out during your stay.

Arbour Hill Cemetery and Memorial
Here you can visit the graves of the dignitaries of the 1916 Easter Rising. The grave site is surrounded by a limestone wall with the names of the deceased inscribed in both Irish and English. To the rear of the cemetery is the United Nations Veterans Association house and gardens and is certainly worth checking out too.

Lilliput Press
The Lilliput Press is one of Irelands smallest and most prestigious publishing houses and is located just a few hundred metres away from the Ashling Hotel. More than 500 titles have been printed and popular topics of books include Irish History, Memoirs and Architecture.

Manor Street
Take a walk through Manor Street in the heart of Stoneybatter, one of Dublin’s Hippest neighbourhoods. You’ll find a wealth of independent shops, deli’s, café’s and traditional pubs. There are some great spots to sit and grab a cup of coffee and watch the world go by or try sampling a local craft beer in L. Mulligan Grocers, a traditional Irish Pub.

National Museum of Decorative Arts at Collins Barracks
The National Museum is just a minutes walk away from the hotel. Here you’ll find exhibitions of furniture, glassware, ceramics and clothing from years gone by. While you’re there, check out the Asgard Yacht exhibition too, the yacht was used during the 1914 Howth Gun Running.

Croppies Acre
Croppies Acre, opposite the National Museum, is a memorial dedicated to those who took part and lost their lives in the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion. Rumour has it that the site is also a mass grave containing the bodies of those who lost their lives during the rebellion. The term croppies refers to the tight haircuts worn by the Irish rebels at the time as they mimicked the style of the French revolutionaries.

Anna Livia Statue at Croppies Park – “Floozy in the Jacuzzi”
The Anna Livia statue, widely known as the “Floozy in the Jacuzzi” lies in Croppies Park outside the Ashling Hotel. The statue was moved here for safe keeping in 2010 from her former home in the city centre. At weekends, late night revellers thought it would be a great idea to fill the fountain up with washing up liquid and give Anna Livia a bubble bath! Our front facing bedrooms on the higher floors can look out on the “Floozy in the Jacuzzi” to ensure she is safe and well!
